A Rare Display of Good Taste

January 14th, 2007

In a rare and unexpected show of good taste, Starbuck’s said so long to the new fluff-injected waste of text from Mitch Albom, and is going to be carrying instead Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone. I haven’t had the misfortune of reading Albom’s newest, but I’ve read from it, and know that not a single Latte afficianado will miss it. One Minute Book Review has the story as well as a link to WagingPeace.org where you can read an essay written by the young Beah in high school.

Thanks for the pingback! There’s an interesting aspect to this story that I didn’t mention because I try to keep my posts short enough to read in 60 seconds: Just before Starbucks announced that it was replacing Albom with Beah, Entertainment Weekly named “For One More Day” one of its five worst books of the year in the year-end double issue (dated Dec. 29/Jan. 5) http://www.ew.com/. You can’t help wondering if somebody at Starbucks didn’t say: How many more “worst of the year lists” does Albom have to make before we dump this guy?
