Vista Update 3: One Week Later
So, I spent the better part of last week taking apart all of my software and hardware configuration, installing Microsoft’s newest beast and putting the whole thing back together again. The hours upon hours of my time spent doing so were not entirely wasted as I found new cool things to do while waiting like flicking rubber bands at the dog, or counting cracks in the ceiling. It was a jolly good time.
I’m not going to go into a deep, detail oriented review of Vista, because I honestly don’t care too much. There’s not much there to see. I came, I saw, I could have conquered but decided to go home and take a nap. It’s more or less the same stuff, but with prettier features. the Aero effects are nice, but entirely unnecessary, gadgets are old hat if you’ve ever seen a Mac or downloaded from Google, and the new file system is slow and hard to navigate when simply trying to open a file quickly.
The slow down is considerable. To be fair, my computer is 2 years old, but you should never release an operating system of all things that needs brand new machines to run. It’s just bad marketing. At the moment I’ve got most of the special flashy effects turned down or off and try my hardest not to multitask too much (something XP had no problem supporting) lest my desktop freeze up and send me into a sightless rage.
I wouldn’t recommend the update honestly. If you get a new computer, it should already have the stuff on there, and then go ahead and play around, but for those of you with a good solid XP machine, leave it as is until you upgrade. It’s not worth the headache quite yet.
